Do you decorate sugar cookies as part of your Christmas traditions? I have fond memories of decorating Christmas cookies with my family during December. We’d drag out the dough mat and grab a rolling pin and get to work. There’d be flour everywhere and we eat as much icing and sprinkles as we put on cookies.
Last year we invited our Moms Group from church over for cookie decorating. I had pinned a sugar cookie recipe on Pinterest that I decided to try. I’ve only hosted once but it was super easy. I provided all the cookies and everyone else brought sprinkles and icing. It’s absolute chaos (we had green icing in our carpet for weeks!) but it was totally worth all the work. The kids have fun and our neighbors get plates full of cookies.
Blythe and I spent time the night before making all the cookies. She loves to wear an apron and pour the ingredients into the bowl of the mixer. I love this picture of our hands rolling dough out together. I hope we spend years of holidays together in the kitchen cooking up festive treats together.
These are seriously the best sugar cookies I’ve ever eaten. They stay soft and chewy for several days and they are also sturdy enough to stand up to lots of icing and sprinkles. They are so good that my friend who is hosting this year’s cookie decorating party actually requested the recipe so we can enjoy them again. If you have cookie making plans in your future then I’d highly recommend these cookies!
ingredients
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
3 tsp. vanilla
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
5 1/2 cups flour
instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Then add eggs, vanilla and sour cream. Mix until combined.
- In a separate bowl, combine the salt, baking soda and flour and add to the contents of the mixer.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it’s about 1/4 inch thick.
- Use cookie cutters to cut out shaped from the dough. Use a spatula to transfer each cookie to a parchment lined cookie sheet.
- Bake at 375 for 7-8 minutes. *Note: cookies will not appear to be done. If you want soft chewy cookies do not cook past 8 minutes.
- Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes and then transfer carefully to a cooling rack.
- Once completely cooled, frost and decorate.

I remember making cookies at the house on Catskill. Jennifer, you were a tiny little thing. I have photos of you sitting cross-legged on the counter in the kitchen. Good times and good memories.
