Growing up, we did not eat sugary cereal at our house. Ever. That was a treat that was simply reserved for my grandparents house and summer camp. It’s something my brother and I joke about now but at the time I hated. Once I went to college and began eating cereal at least twice a day, I was in love with all things sugary and unhealthy filling my cereal bowl.
I survived grad school on Marshmallow Mateys. It was grad school people! I only bought cereal that came in 3 pound bags. It was pure surgery goodness. Imagine my delight when we moved to Chicago and discovered Cereality. It’s a restaurant chain that simply sells breakfast cereal. They make it interesting by adding all sorts of toppings and combining cereals. Their website says there’s a location in DFW so all my Texas readers should check it out the next time you are there.
Anyways, that’s the first time I enjoyed S’mores cereal. It’s Golden Grahams, chocolate chips and marshmallows. It’s like eating S’mores for breakfast. This is a combo that I still crave but am only allowed to eat without my children. It’s too difficult to explain why only mommy can have chocolate and marshmallows for breakfast.
When I saw this recipe for S’mores Bars on Pinterest, I knew that I had to give it a try. They took my beloved cereal creation and made it into a bar. So yummy! I took these to youth group and our students raved! They were gone in no time flat.
Please learn from my mistake though. When make this recipe, I thought I’d save a step and mix the chocolate chips in the pot with the cereal and marshmallow mix. Do you know why she tells you to not do that? Because if you mix chocolate in the hot pot where you melted marshmallows it will melt the chocolate. Lesson learned! My result was not as pretty but I think it was just as delicious. These would be a great snack to have on hand for Thanksgiving. I hope you enjoy them as much as we did.
