Let me just start with saying it you haven’t ever made homemade whipped cream you should rectify that immediately. As in tomorrow. I realize that I sound borderline crazy as I confess my love for this delicious treat but honestly, it’s just that good. In my opinion, it’s one simple addition that makes your guests feel extra special and it’s so easy to make!
Whipped Cream
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 Tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Whip the cream, sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form. You can use a stand mixer, hand held mixer or a whisk to accomplish this.
Make this right before serving. I’ve found that it’s best if served within 2 hours. Refrigerate until you are ready to use. I typically at least double this recipe and it always gets eaten.
The great thing about this basic recipe is it’s so easy to modify. You can add liquor, extracts, powders or spices. Based on what you are pairing this dessert with experiment with different flavors and combinations. Use nutmeg and cinnamon to spice up whipped cream for Thanksgiving pumpkin pie. Try mint with a chocolate dessert or use rum to compliment a fruit dessert. The sky’s the limit with all the possibilities!
This also made me think about changing recipes in general. If you are wanting to begin writing your own recipes or experimenting more in the kitchen, I’d encourage you to start with your favorite recipe. Pick something that you make regularly. A recipe that you know like the back of your hand. Most of the recipes that we love, we’ve made subtle changes to. It may be as simple as sautéing onions instead of using them raw. Or cooking onion in bacon grease instead of butter to add additional flavor. It’s much easier to change a recipe you are familiar with instead of a brand new recipe. As you become more comfortable changing recipes you will begin to see changes that you would like to make before even you make a recipe. I’d love to hear what changes you’ve made to your favorite recipes. Can’t wait to hear how you get creative in the kitchen.
