Hi there friends! I’m so glad to be back after my trip to Haiti. As always, I had big plans to write posts to auto publish while I was away but time with Currey and the kids took priority. Thanks for understanding.
I’ve got to tell you, after experiencing all I saw in Haiti, it’s hard to come back and share any kind of recipe. I do plan on getting back to regular posting soon but I’m still decompressing from my trip. As I was talking to my mom about the trip, I realized I’d never been on a mission trip as an adult. I went on trips with my dad and my high school youth group and even lead trips in college. But I was blown away at what I saw through the lens of mother.
I held babies that were naked because their parents couldn’t afford to cloth them and saw children sick with disease that could be cured if they had access to health care. My heart broke while visiting an orphanage where most of the orphans are “social orphans” meaning their parents are living but can’t provide for them. Their parents bring them to an orphanage to live so they have a daily meal and access to water. The thought that parents are forced to make these choices is something I continue to wrestle with.
And yet we saw hope. Families that have left comfortable lives in the US to serve the people of Haiti. Ministries for sick and dying adults where the buildings are clean, the employees hospitable and the the patients ready to joyfully receive love and attention. We watched children dance and play in the streets while we delivered water. My relationships with others on my team grew deeper and I laughed so hard that my sides hurt.
I was stretched and challenged and broken. And it was so good. This trip was a sweet reminder that I was created with a deep love of people. That I was created uniquely and that my heart for the hurting and oppressed is one of the most beautiful gifts that God has given me.
So yes, I will soon return with recipes and the usual line up. But for today, I’m soaking up every last moment with Currey and the kids.
