If you have ever been an out of town guest in my parent’s home, you have most likely been greeted with a tray upon your arrival in their home. It’s one of the first ways that you are welcomed at their house. I started getting trays when I came home from college and even now, with children of my own, my mom still has a tray for us all whenever we come home.
She simply takes a rectangular tray and fills it with all sorts of treats! From clothing and makeup to magazines and gift cards to our favorite restaurants, what’s on the tray is always a surprise. Most importantly, there are a few sweet treats to indulge in during our stay. One of the newest additions is caramel apples and I couldn’t love them more! A simple caramel apple would be divine but these apples are usually covered in caramel and chocolate, then sprinkled in nuts or chocolate chips. They are so delicious!
I love the idea of caramel apples but I have yet to perfect them. I’ve made several valiant attempts but mine are never picture perfect like those beautiful ones at specialty chocolate stores. When I saw a recipe for deconstructed caramel apples I was intrigued. They appeared to have all the deliciousness of a caramel apple but by nature don’t need to look so pretty. This recipe is so incredibly easy and the finished product is a beautiful centerpiece as well.
All you need is:
4-6 Granny Smith Apples
1/2 c caramel sauce
1/2 c hot fudge or melted chocolate chips
Any additional toppings such as: chopped heath bars (or any candy bars, snickers would be great!), mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, chopped nuts or chocolate sprinkles.
Simply slice apples however you desire. I just used an apple corer because it’s easy and all the pieces are uniform. Arrange the slices on a platter. Pour caramel and chocolate over the sliced apples. Sprinkle desired toppings over apples while the chocolate and caramel are soft so that the pieces stick to the apples. For this batch we just used heath bars and chocolate chips.
This would be a great dessert to serve while watching your favorite football team. Another fun idea would to be to have an apple bar where you provide sliced apples and a wide variety of toppings and then allow your guests to create their own dessert. The possibilities are truly endless!
